Seán prop designed for 10 years in New York City before relocating to Minneapolis, MN. After spending seven years at the Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival he went on to freelance prop shows for most of the non-profit theaters in NYC. He designed special effects for Sam Shepard's last three plays, Kicking a Dead Horse, Ages of the Moon, and A Particle of Dread (Oedipus Variations), in Dublin, Derry, London, and NYC. He designed the blood effects for Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo in LA for CTG, on Broadway, and Lookingglass in Chicago. Other Broadway credits include Take Me Out, Caroline or Change, Well, and Hair. In Minneapolis he has worked with Mixed Blood, Swandive, Freshwater, Fortune’s Fool, Gremlin, The Moving Company, The Playwrights Center, Bedlam, The Southern, Minnesota Opera, CTC, and the Guthrie. He has an MFA in Prop Design and Management from the University of Illinois Champaign/Urbana and is a member of S*P*A*M, the Society of Properties Artisan Managers. Ben Layne is Co-Artistic Director of Freshwater Theatre alongside his wife Ruth Virkus. As a freelance director, Ben has worked with several other theatres in the Twin Cities area, most recently directing The Skriker with Fortune's Fool Theater. Other Twin Cities area companies Ben has directed for include The Phipps, Freshwater Theatre, Northern Starz Children's Theatre, Chameleon Theatre, Special When Lit Theatre, Devious Mechanics, and Swandive Theatre, among others.
