Cyrano Part 2?

This play is extremely well-acted and directed. The fight choreography was a particular highlight, being dynamic and inventive. I think my issue with the script is that the ultimately story (effective a sequel to the original Cyrano) detracts somewhat from the tragedy of the original. Having said that, I think it's successful in what it wants to be, and the playwright adequately captures the eloquence of the language. I would recommend this show!

Company: Tom Reed
Show: Gunplay!
Venue: Mixed Blood Theatre

Tough subject for comedy

I'm a teacher, and I wish I could have my students see this show. Reed manages to take a tough, tough subject and poke fun at it in a way that was somehow non offensive. That's incredibly difficult to do, and it was hilarious throughout. The play is also really smart and has social commentary without being too heavy-handed. (Our protagonists are themselves gun enthusiasts, but they aren't lunatics about it.) Lastly, the romantic subplot absolutely tugs at your heart strings. Highly recommend this!

Company: Paper Soul
Show: SOFT
Venue: Ritz Theater Mainstage

Important

This is a timely reaction to the Incel movement. It was a fantastic character study of a man frustrated by romance in the digital age, and ultimately turning to violence. I appreciated the subtlety, actually. (Surprising, perhaps, given the amount of gore on display in this show.) I felt that the message wasn't too heavy-handed, and was thus impactful. We were meant to dislike the main character, but he had some redeeming qualities that made him identifiable as well. This helped ratchet up the intensity right up until the very end!

Company: Colleen Somerville Productions
Show: Not Fair, My Lady!
Venue: Mixed Blood Theatre

Marvelous!

This production was not only heartfelt, but entertaining. This serves as an unflinching commentary on sexism on Broadway, but has high entertainment value as well. The women involved and tremendous talent, energy, and chemistry. Don't miss this! (Also, they hate on Carousel, which is totally fine by me. Seriously, why is that still a thing?)

Company: Hit the Lights! Theater Co.
Show: WHALES
Venue: Ritz Theater Mainstage

Mystifying

This show has a bit of everything you could ask for in Fringe. Tremendous energy, live music, audience participation, raunchy humor, educational value, and shadow puppetry that borders on being downright magical. Plus, they had drinking game rules for their own show, so that was a plus.
