Incredibly Talented!
Forget what any preconceived notions you have about mime and clowning, and go see this show. Tyler is incredibly talented, charming, funny, and thoroughly entertaining. You should be so lucky to be one of the audience members with whom he chooses to engage. I loved this show and am in awe of Tyler's skill and expertise.
Company: That's Enough Drama
Show: Attention Seeker
Venue: Southern Theater
Brilliant, Hilarious, & that rare breed: original
Gerard's manic wit hits the stage before he does when we hear his voice in the dark before he enters, and then--to my utter, mesmerized, engaged delight--it never lets up. As Gerard sits on stage hilariously connecting the dots of a key childhood moments to his jagged career trajectory to sessions with his therapist, it's as if the audience becomes a giant Barbara Walters interviewing him and making him reveal to the world his worst jokes made funny, his excruciatingly (emphasis on excruciatingly) embarrassing moments, and the secret to his aforementioned manic wit. Time flies as this brilliant, hilarious, original storyteller and comedian holds the audience--Barbara Walters--in his thrall.
Company: Jaded Optimist Productions
Show: Animal, Vegetable, Political
Venue: Augsburg Mainstage
Eye-opening, Moving, & Provocative
Didn't know what to expect about this smart, political, storytelling show, and what a fantastic surprise this show is! The audience is in the hands of two pros who know how engage, provoke, entertain, and move us with not only their own beautifully-told stories, but coaxing splendid stories from some of the audience members. As they discuss America's current landscape interwoven with aforementioned personal stories, they show us that the only way we can communicate is by sharing and listening to each others' stories. Go. You're in for an hour of eye-opening, moving, and provocative show.
Company: The Herd
Show: I Killed the Cow
Venue: Augsburg Studio
Stylish, Smart, Surprising
Larissa is a beautifully talented performer, and her show is stylish, smart, and surprising. She does a brilliant job of connecting the cow to the cheetah to coming-of-age sexually in all the messy and ambivalent feelings attached. The show is well-crafted and intelligent, funny and moving: superb theater from an expert performer.
Company: The Adventures of Les Kurkendaal
Show: Walking While Black in Moscow
Venue: Ritz Theater Studio
You'll Fall in Love with Les!
Les is a natural and hilarious raconteur. Ever been to Moscow? Let Les take you there and keep you laughing the whole way, right up until the surprising and poignant moving at the end. I'd met Les earlier and knew immediately he was a stellar teller. Once I saw him on stage, I knew I wasn't wrong. Funny, sweet, charming, and well-worth taking the trip with Les.
