Company: Jamie Brickhouse
Show: Dangerous When Wet: Booze, Sex, and My Mother
Venue: Augsburg Studio
Disconnect on leaving the theater
We spent an hour with stories of Jamie and his mother. We heard about sex, loss of virginity 1st grade boyfriend missed opportunities blackout drunk life with a drink in one hand, a cigarette in the other, and one's head thrown back in laughter sobriety. When the show ended and I went out into the sunlit lobby with people laughing and talking, I felt that we were in different worlds - those of us who had just seen Jamie's show and all of those cheerful people outside.
Company: Mike's Brass
Show: Medusa
Venue: Celtic Junction
Myth and brass band
This show educated me on the genealogy of Medusa. I knew about Perseus but hadn't known about Medusa's parents or sisters. This was enjoyable for several reasons - brass band, dance, learning. If you only have one afternoon to Fringe, time at Celtic Junction and Medusa is well spent.
Company: Beardog Productions
Show: The Things They Carried
Venue: Ritz Theater Studio
Wow! Amazing storytelling
This is a performance that makes you weep, give a standing ovation, and when you leave the theater you wonder how people outside can be so cheery. It needs time to be absorbed.
Company: Tyler West
Show: ABEYANCE
Venue: Strike Theater
The shortest hour of mime you'll experience
While mime could be amusing for 5 minutes, not for a whole hour! If I hadn't seen Tyler's preview, this show would not have been on my list. There were dream sequences, tightrope walking, the vending machine depicted on Tyler's postcard, a rowboat and so much more. Waking up and going to a job interview with resume in pocket gave this structure. I did wonder after the water bubbler scene that there wasn't a restroom scene.
Company: Mainly Me Productions
Show: A Justice League of Their Own
Venue: Theatre in the Round
Women's superpowers are more than you know
The ensemble kept things moving. My regret was not having seen "League of Their Own" so I missed jokes. It was refreshing to see women as the heroes, claiming their hero-dom, not just being the token for wallpapering diversity.
Company: Gabriel Mata/Movements
Show: DREAMING
Venue: Southern Theater
It is a joy to watch Mata weave his story
I saw Gabriel Mata's show last year. This has been on my list of shows to see since I saw that he made it into this year's Fringe. I had thought of dreaming as what happens during sleep until the dance and audio about coming from Mexico. Then a whole new aspect of Dreaming appeared.
Company: Afoutayi Dance, Music and Arts
Show: Experience Haiti!
Venue: Celtic Junction
Full of energy
There was only one child in the audience for the performance I attended, so less audience participation than there might have been. More than half the audience got up to dance at the end, which was impressive. Family Fringe is as popular with adults-only as those with children. At the start we were given words and phrases to learn as an entrance into this show. Through dance and story, we learned about growing up in Haiti. Water. Freedom from slavery. Community.
Company: Kelly Haramis
Show: Hard-Core CORN
Venue: Strike Theater
Many corn facts
This was educational and shocking. Corn is everywhere! For someone with an intolerance to corn, eating and life become a series of traps to navigate.
Company: That's Enough Drama
Show: Attention Seeker
Venue: Southern Theater
It all wraps up in the end
This show seemed to be made up of many digressions and digressions upon digression. In the end, all of the stories got wrapped up.
Company: Three Crazy Sons
Show: Flipping Off Our Lord
Venue: Rarig Center Xperimental
Not quite convincing
I wanted to enjoy this more than I did. At the beginning, when he spoke about a boy and his father., at times it seemed that this was told from the perspective of the young boy and at other times from the perspective of the now-grown son.
Company: Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society
Show: The Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society Versus the Nazis
Venue: Rarig Center Thrust
Radio show recreation
This reminded me of "The Big Broadcast" The Mysterious Old Radio ... recreates 2 old radio scripts. I enjoyed watching the cast produce sound effects.
