such skill

The first time I saw this group they blew me away; I go see them every year. This year was more focused on the kids, which was great. But they can't draw the crowds at kids fringe like they can in the regular fringe. I hope it's worth it and they can come back next year.

Company: Hit the Lights! Theater Co.
Show: WHALES
Venue: Ritz Theater Mainstage

trying to find identity

I saw this groups show last year and loved it. However this years show tries to be too many things. A punk rock opera, a drinking game, a history lesson and a shadow puppet show. Plus audience participation! Give me the shadow puppetry please, and cut the drinking game and audience participation. The music was also too hard core for my tastes.

Company: Erin Sheppard Presents
Show: Book of Shadows
Venue: Theatre in the Round

Nice mix of dance/storytelling

This was spooky/fun to watch and listen to. Enjoyed Tajs stories, the music was good and dances very engaging. I am a follower of Erin Sheppards work and she does not dissapoint.

Company: Martin Dockery
Show: Martin Dockery: Delirium
Venue: Rarig Center Thrust

engaging

Martin is a master at drawing you into his world and working magic. He makes it look so easy, with his relaxed and engaging style. As a storyteller, I know it's not easy at all! 3 unique stories about real life adventures, heartfelt, funny and heartbreaking!

Company: Sidecar Theatre
Show: Summers in Prague
Venue: Rarig Center Arena

Solid!

No gimmicks or fringey stuff. This was just a good solid theater piece. Terrific script, great acting, very believable characters. See it if you can!

Company: Flash Grenade Productions
Show: The Flashlight Zone: 20 Science Fiction Plays in One Hour
Venue: Theatre in the Round

no time to get bored!

This was fast paced and entertaining. The actors proved to be very versatile and talented. But I really wanted to hear Nichole Carey sing! I thought at least one of the vignettes would let her do that!

Company: Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society
Show: The Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society Versus the Nazis
Venue: Rarig Center Thrust

Takes you back!

This group has the acting chops and timing to give old time radio the props it deserves. Great job with accents and impeccable Foley work. Good stuff!

Company: The Adventures of Les Kurkendaal
Show: Walking While Black in Moscow
Venue: Ritz Theater Studio

"Hey Bro"! Ya gotta love Les!

Les is a natural comedian and storyteller, and makes his audience comfortable right away. This is a lovely retelling of his trip. This man is an intrepid traveller and engaging storyteller.

Company: Mainly Me Productions
Show: A Justice League of Their Own
Venue: Theatre in the Round

Frenetic & Entertaining

I have not seen the two movies this is a mash up of but it didn't matter. This is a typical Josh Carson madcap farce with some real belly laughs (the "woke" joke had me rocking with laughter). These ladies were terrific, and the guys were equally talented. Kudos especially to Brad Erickson, Andy Kraft and Heather Meyer, who had to switch characters on a dime! Fun Stuff

Company: Jamie Brickhouse
Show: Dangerous When Wet: Booze, Sex, and My Mother
Venue: Augsburg Studio

Fabulous!

A well polished gem of a story - funny, engaging and terrifying all at the same time. I'm amazed he survived his misspent youth, but am so glad he did to tell his tale. Great stuff!

Company: On the Verge Theatre
Show: Boobilicious
Venue: Augsburg Studio

Milked it!

This was a bit of a one (or two) trick pony but they milked it for all it was worth! High energy and fun! Especially loved the Barbie song.

Company: Say It Loud Productions
Show: Revolt of the Beavers
Venue: Mixed Blood Theatre

Another hit!

The folks who brought you last years It Can't Happen Here are back at it with another 1930s political piece. This is very well cast and a ton of fun. It has a message but doesn't take itself too seriously. Really good stuff.

Company: Rooftop Theatre Company
Show: The Complete Works of William Shatner (abridged)
Venue: Mixed Blood Theatre

The title alone made this a must see

I'm no trekkie but still HAD to see this show, and I was not dissapointed. The Shat is such an icon, and this sendup is spot on. The cast is terrific but Edwin Strout stands out, espec when he sings at the end.

Company: That's Enough Drama
Show: Attention Seeker
Venue: Southern Theater

ADHD Live on stage!

I got tired just listening to this guy. He is an effort to understand and so manic I could not keep up with him. Tons of energy and funny at times, but after a while I was just waiting for the hour to be done so I could relax and have a drink!

Company: TROMPE L'OEIL
Show: Bits & Bobs: An Evening of Short Plays
Venue: Theatre in the Round

A mixed bag of mostly goodies

The 5 short pieces went from brilliant to "What Just Happened"? The acting was solid throughout, and the "squirrel" play alone was well worth the price of admission!

Company: Fearless Comedy Productions
Show: Deep in The 100 Acre Woods: A "Pooh"-dunnit?
Venue: Minnsky Theatre

Oh Pooh!

This was a very inventive concept and some things worked really well. The things that didn't stuck out a bit for me and made it difficult to thoroughly enjoy it. I really loved the portrayal of Piglet, Rabbit, Tigger and Eeyore (as a torch singer). I had the hardest time believing the tall bearded man on stage as Pooh because he made no effort to act or sound like Pooh at all. All in all though, a fun show!

Company: Oncoming Productions
Show: Geminae
Venue: Southern Theater

Chilling and Enthralling

This group gave us The Last Bombardment last year, another Sci Fi Horror that I loved. This one was equally riveting. The special effects and live music were phenomenal, along with creative movement and stellar acting. This will give me some nightmares, but they will be worth it!

Company: Comedy Suitcase
Show: Slapdash Panic: Comedy Suitcase ended up in the Fringe Festival with 3 weeks notice and no show!
Venue: Strike Theater

another hit from "team ScrimHagen"

I am a huge fan of Comedy Suitcase, and even this slapdash show was the most fun I had all day! My vote is for more of the physical comedy and movement over the verbal improv. They are terrific at both but I prefer the former. Thanks Guys!!

Company: Tom Reed
Show: Gunplay!
Venue: Mixed Blood Theatre

He Shoots, He Scores!

Ya gotta hand it to Tom Reed, whose wit has created a plethora of fringe hits for us to enjoy. It's a funny script, but also has so much heart and a real message as well. Cast standouts were Adelin Phelps as the love interest, Tom himself and the always hilarious Lauren Anderson. Loved it!

Company: Concrete Drops
Show: Inescapable
Venue: Augsburg Mainstage

Beckett meets Mamet meets Dockery!

They talk so fast it made my head spin. The first 15 minutes seemed nonsensical until I got the gist of what was happening. Then I sat there mesmerised, wondering how these 2 would get out of the mess they were in. Great acting and repartee, plus a clever script. Entertaining!

Company: Literally Entertainment
Show: The Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist or, Ocean's 'Eh'T?: A Musical
Venue: Mixed Blood Theatre

Serious Sappy Fun!

After a bit of a kerfuffle getting seated (House accidentally oversold, about 25 people had to stand, myself included) the show got a late start. Standing or no, I'm glad I stuck around to enjoy it. A bunch of very inept syrup loving burglars attempt to steal back some of the syrup being held hostage in a storehouse being run by a kingpin. Chaos ensues. Funny stuff, good music to boot! Good Sappy Fun!

Company: Threepenny Productions
Show: Fools, Errant
Venue: Augsburg Mainstage

follow your dreams!

Goes to show you A little idealism hurts no one! The Script is excellent, but the acting and directing are what makes this show. Chase Adelsman reminds me of a young Jack Black, and Thomas Buan is equally talented. The repoire between the two brothers is terrific, and the great comic timing is the result of stellar direction. Plus the message is clear: young people are our hope for the future. See this show.

Company: Heidi Arneson
Show: ITCHY TINGLES
Venue: Rarig Center Xperimental

Heidi to the Max

A master storyteller Brings out the child in all of us; makes us remember. Tony Hausers lovely classical guitar work really enhances Heidi's otherworldly spoken word. She's a little "out there", but also completely mesmerizing.

Company: Crone Productions
Show: JEANNETTE RANKIN: CHAMPION OF PERSISTENCE
Venue: Augsburg Studio

History comes alive

A history lesson By a first time fringer; live on stage! J. Emily Peabody wears a lot of hats in this production. The woman has done her research, and it shows! A remarkable retelling of the life of one of Americas first feminists. I learned a lot PLUS was entertained!

Company: Philip Simondet
Show: Self-Titled Debut Album
Venue: Mixed Blood Theatre

toe tapping fun!

Not just a concert; Things can get messy When egos collide! I took a chance on this based on a very fun preview and was not disappointed. Fun original music and a silly but heartwarming story make for a fun 50 minutes.

Company: Ghoulish Delights, LLC
Show: The Screaming Skull
Venue: Rarig Center Thrust

Good Retelling of a classic tale

Goulish Delights! Appropriate name; Great Foley too! "Foley" is another word for live sound effects. These and the lighting effects really enhanced this stark, spooky and well told tale.

Company: Beardog Productions
Show: The Things They Carried
Venue: Ritz Theater Studio

Not Just Another War Story

Vietnam War Visceral and Gut Wrenching; Stowell brings it home Wow. just wow. Stowell brings his heart and soul into Tim O'briens' gut wrenching memoir. The characters come alive on stage. This intimate space will sell out quick. Advance reservations recommended.

Company: Monster Science Productions
Show: What To Do In Case Of Dinosaur Attack
Venue: Mixed Blood Theatre

Jurassically entertaining

Partly a Lecture Part Stand up routine; Equals Comedy Gold! Matt Kessens droll humor does not fail to amuse! Witty writing, enhanced by a silly slide show makes for big belly laughs! Highly enjoyable

Company: Jamie Shriner Tells Stories
Show: Wife Material
Venue: Augsburg Studio

"Mrs Biddle" Rocks!

Funny, Sexy, Brave; Loving sex is not a crime! Ms. Shriner shines! Jamie Shriner bares her soul and more in this wonderfully brave and funny work. Terrific original music expertly sung. Highly enjoyable!
