The good ship Ritz

So, you know that feeling when a show starts and you can tell you're in good hands? Like the performers know exactly what they're doing and aren't going to disappoint you, so you can relax and enjoy? That's the feeling I got watching this show. It takes a lot of skill to facilitate fun and interesting audience participation (especially from a drunk audience), but these guys do it well. Beautiful music, creative shadow puppetry, and facts about the whaling industry that make you go, "huh!" make this more of a fancifal exploration of the material than a straightforward plot, but, y'know, that's a good thing, 'cause I didn't want to see a staging of Moby Dick. This show is a celebration of many kinds of theatrical fun and beauty, so definitely add it to your schedule.

Trample the Patriarchy

This is exactly the kind of show I wanted to start my Fringe with: funny, topical, and well-performed. Part parody, part tongue-in-cheek musical revue, part autobiography, this team of kick-ass women deliver engaging performances and strong vocals throughout. Me and other women in the audience were nodding along to much of what they had to say. For those who haven't been a woman in the arts, this show will give you a clever, entertaining window into what it's like to be a gal in the biz.

Worth staying up late

Listen. I am old and tired. If I'm going to stay up for a 10:00 show on a weeknight, I am praying it will be worth my while. Will I be staring, bleary-eyed and wishing I was at home in bed, or will that Fringe magic keep me up like an espresso shot? I definitely did NOT regret my choice this time. The 58 minutes flew by in a flurry of short pieces that packed a lot of story into tiny little packages. The performers were all entertaining and engaging, showing quite a range. Ala the Neo-Futurists' Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, the audience calls out which of the pieces they'd like to see next after each one is done. I personally liked that bit of fourth wall breaking as a palate cleanser between each piece, some of which were surprisingly affecting. I'm not crying over a robot, you're crying over a robot! Definitely put this one on your list, even if it means staying up past your bedtime.
