Of Gods and Humans

I enjoyed the comparison of the Greek god and goddess playing cards, as did the refugee brother and sister. However, stepping away and up the "mountainous" stairway did not work at all for me. Maybe front and center, in the middle of the story, instead of away and apart. Sound off stage was less audible, and I wonder if a similar effect might have been accomplished with the sound board. The tragic reality of her family and other refugees in Cypress was definitely brought to light. I was fascinated my the combination of slides and art off stage left. My only concern was the smell of the paint was quite noticeable and disturbing to me. As a person with a disability, I wish I had sat further away. My partner didn't notice it at all. I almost chose to leave. Curious if choice of paints could be made that would not disturb people with neurological challenges. Just one way to make theater more accessible.

Company: Weggel-Reed Productions
Show: Couple Fight: The Musical!
Venue: Rarig Center Thrust

Inclusive and Beyond Couples

Each year, I laugh and laugh, over and over, at the range of funny stories. I got a kick out of the musical additions this year. I particularly enjoyed the amazing full cast at the top of the show and then the end. The gay male couple on vacation was hysterical. Got a kick out of the higher kick, higher lift Indian dancers. The couple of roommates was a nice twist. The contrast in performance styles for the lesbian couple was a trip. The three women friends? Not going to tell you! Still laughing over Shannon and Eric's wedding fight last year. So many stories. A stage bursting with emotions and energy! Grab a seat!

Company: Concrete Drops
Show: Inescapable
Venue: Augsburg Mainstage

Out of the Closet

Well, if one is going to pick up a token for one show, but then go to another, this was the perfect time to make such a "mistake". Actually, I was drawn into this bizarre script immediately as it fired rapidly, round and round, like a roller coaster. Personally, I do not like roller coasters. But image your mind of fire following these two talented actors round and round into madness. And just when you're totally out of your mind with their word acrobatics, you get! Go for the shear thrill of it! Then go to the kiddie rides to get your sea legs back again. Phenomenal script and brilliant acting!

Dynamic Duo Turns Into Solo Hit!

Of course you want to congratulate a best friend on getting that to die for job! Of course! Really. full enthusiasm! Except for many your artistic partner, who is scheduled to share the stage in a week at one of five Fringe shows with which you are involved. Conflict? No! Rip roaring hysteria as the planned duet becomes a solo hit! Bravo sister! Well done! Piece of cake! You earned that dance!

Company: Gabriel Mata/Movements
Show: DREAMING
Venue: Southern Theater

Dreaming By a Dreamer

Gabriel is an amazing dancer, who incorporates integral storytelling to create unique dance experiences. He appeared to weave in and out of pieces, much like a dream, which seemed unconnected. I became more intrigued as the piece of the puzzle began to fit together. Curious if the dancer from under the covers was another part of himself or a person from his past. The dancing at the wall brought home to me the fact that we could lose this dreamer to the bigotry of the current administration.

Company: Papafully Designed
Show: I FOUND ME
Venue: Southern Theater

Lost in the Wanderings

I found myself pulled out of the show more than drawn into the story of all the dancers. Why was it the story about the five dancers in pink and white? What about the dancers in blue? Seemed to be overuse or fixation on use of candle and heart props. Parts seemed too drawn out for me. Was there technical difficulties with one of the song or was it intended to be distracting? Narrator was not heard well. I've seen narration combined with dance. I'm not sure if the combination was well served in this piece. Best wishes. Not my cup of tea this year.

Company: Deacon Gamzee Productions
Show: ILLINOIS BOY BLUES
Venue: Augsburg Studio

From Out of Town Preview to Opening Night!

Khalil Muhammad drew me in immediately with his smooth moves, melodic voice, and powerful personification of Romaine Ri'chard. Before the three minute preview even ended, I knew I had to see this show. Opening night's only disappointment was a small audience. But Khalil put his heart and soul into this performance as if to the packed houses of the ILLINOIS BOY BLUES! Please see this show.

Company: Crone Productions
Show: JEANNETTE RANKIN: CHAMPION OF PERSISTENCE
Venue: Augsburg Studio

Resistance and Persistence

I enjoyed opening night of this one woman show about the first woman elected to congress. Occasionally, it dragged on a bit, but the audience was very responsive and encouraging. I particularly enjoyed the historical slides, which provided an important backdrop. Costume changes and props were minimalistic. Devoted story teller.
