Frothy fun

The plot is a witty drawing-room farce, which is always enjoyable. The acting is generally quite strong and the action is well paced, although at times the twists and turns creak a little -- which may be the biggest problem with this type of comedy, and not a reflection on the actors or the production. It's definitely worth seeing if you're in the mood for something light.

Standing ovation on Sunday night!

I've been a fan of Jim Stowell since the first time I heard him. I know no one who can walk that fine line between acting and storytelling so skillfully. No, it would be more accurate to say that Jim obliterates the line, pulling the audience completely into the times and places (both physical and internal) that he fully inhabits during performances. So this show was at the top of my personal "must see" list; and even though I was expecting excellence, I was still blown away. The material is emotionally powerful, historically important, and deeply relevant, because our country is still sending our sons and daughters to war. I wish I could give this show TEN stars.

Memorable stories

Loren Niemi and Howard Lieberman draw inspiration from each other and the audience, so the content of the show will differ each night. On opening night they regaled us with deeply moving tales that dug down to the roots of how our political and social values are formed, reinforced, and resisted. This show awakens both the heart and the mind. My spouse and I talked politics all the way home!

Company: Sister Shakes
Show: Proof! An Alien Abduction Pop Musical
Venue: Augsburg Studio

Clever and fun!

Superbly entertaining, with very clever lyrics, lively music, good comic acting—all in the service of a corny science fiction plot that is pure delight.

Company: The Adventures of Les Kurkendaal
Show: Walking While Black in Moscow
Venue: Ritz Theater Studio

Fine storytelling

An amusing, informative travelogue of Russia through the eyes of a gay Black man. Les Kurkendaal takes us to all the big tourist “musts”—St. Basil’s, Lenin’s Tomb, GUM, the subway, and more—and tells us about interacting with a wide range of locals. It’s a rollicking adventure laced with important and honest insights about cross-cultural connections. The lighting changes were a bit distracting, though.
