Wet hot American summer made woke

WOW! Packed with humor, witty pop culture references, and a truly wild plot, this rapidly-paced show manages to makes space for all conversations embodied by ingenious young artists. It's the gem of the Fringe Festival! Cleverly written and beautifully executed, this show managed to make all members in the audience share a laugh

Company: Ruckus Productions
Show: Sidesplitting
Venue: Theatre in the Round

An almost woke camp horror story

A horror story with the class horror tropes, the show was well acted; although, transitions between scenes could have been more smoothly executed. To that end, audience interaction would have brought a smoothness to the show that it was lacking. As to the plot of the story...though the show attempted to modernize classic horror movie tropes, it ultimately came down as tone deaf. This was made poignantly clear at the finale when inconsistent checks on masculinity and sexism (female roles in the show were often sexualized and coerced and presented as clueless) ultimately ended in a seemly racialized conclusion. Coercive acts and sexual harassment were passed off as 'teenagers being teenagers' and 'hormones' in a nonchalant, passive manner. Though that may not have been the intention, that is what I was left to question. Ultimately, the wildly active young cast gave an impassioned performance that, while addressing some forms of sexism, inconsistently ignored overt sexual violence, coercion, racism, sexism, and vulgar masculinity.
