Interesting mix of ballet and modern dance
I saw this group at Fringe two years ago and was wowed by their athleticism and the beauty of the movement on stage. I enjoyed the Ballet that was part of this show but did not enjoy the modern dance that seemed more like a striptease than dance. Also, note to Fringe, Theatre in the Round is not a good venue for ballet. I wonder if some of the jumps were reigned in because of limited stage space. There were a few during the performance that came very close to the seating area. I don't fault the performers on this one. I would rather they not push outside the stage than risk injury by landing on a step or barrier.
Company: The Winding Sheet Outfit
Show: Blood Nocturne
Venue: Southern Theater
Dark but not gruesome
Great show to do at the Southern (home of the TC Horror Festival). I liked the combination of music and storytelling. The beginning song is stuck in my head, a day later. There were some fast transitions in the telling of this story that the cast did a great job keeping coherent. I'm interested in looking up this Countess to find out more.
Company: Monster Science Productions
Show: What To Do In Case Of Dinosaur Attack
Venue: Mixed Blood Theatre
Beware of dinosaurs
Reverend Matt does not disappoint. Commentary pokes at present day issues and brings in many pop culture references of our childhoods. Stay alert though! There are lots of laughs in this show.
Company: Rooftop Theatre Company
Show: The Complete Works of William Shatner (abridged)
Venue: Mixed Blood Theatre
Shatner's Iconic Roles
I feel like I may have seen this one at a Fringe from years past but the material still holds up. The acting was really well done. And what is better, a show with multiple personalities of William Shatner. Many laughs throughout the show.
Company: Flash Grenade Productions
Show: The Flashlight Zone: 20 Science Fiction Plays in One Hour
Venue: Theatre in the Round
Audience engagement and a fun ride
This is a fun idea and a great way to get audience engagement, especially in a space like Theatre in the Round. The performers did a great job of taking audience requests and keeping the show moving. The science fiction isn't over the top. You could tell the performers enjoyed what they were enjoying being in the show as much as the audience was enjoying the show.
Company: Literally Entertainment
Show: The Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist or, Ocean's 'Eh'T?: A Musical
Venue: Mixed Blood Theatre
Great show, eh?
This group does a great job with musicals, from Oregon Trail to Gilligan's Island. The lyrics are witty and the dialog on stage is fun to watch. Though the subject of this play gets sticky at times, the cast pulls it off, literally! Well done, once again, Literally Entertainment!
Company: MonTra Performance
Show: Aphrodite's Refugees
Venue: Rarig Center Xperimental
Wonderful storytelling and visuals
Emotional storytelling of a family caught in the middle of conflict and very poignant with today's ongoing plight of refugees and immigrants trying to find a better life. I enjoyed the cuts to Aphrodite and Aries and the role the "Gods" played in the outcome of each phase of the family's struggle. As Monica changed from one character to another, her facial expressions changed to that character. When she came back to herself as the storyteller, you could see a "veil" lift.
Company: Gabriel Mata/Movements
Show: DREAMING
Venue: Southern Theater
More dance and less dialog
Though there were some funny bits in the dialog, going into this show I was looking for more dance and less talk. The last two dances were spectacular and fun to watch. Wanted more of that throughout the show. Also awkward at the end when the audience gave Gabriel and standing ovation and he did not return to the stage.
Company: Oncoming Productions
Show: Geminae
Venue: Southern Theater
Powerful
This was a great performance, right up there with the group that did Ray Bradbury's Kaleidoscope two years ago at Fringe. It's not easy to do Space on stage and I've seen many lackluster attempts. Not this one though. I enjoyed how they portrayed movement in space. The acting was superb and emotional.
Company: Beardog Productions
Show: The Things They Carried
Venue: Ritz Theater Studio
Emotional and well told
I've read most of Tim O'Brien's books on Vietnam including this one. The Things They Carried was my favorite because of the details about the men Tim served with, the relationships they formed, and how each one dealt with their experience in Vietnam. Jim did a great job showing all of this in his retelling of this book.
Company: Pacific Midwest Ballet
Show: Zombies And Pirouettes
Venue: Southern Theater
Ballet with humor
It was fun to see a classical ballet performance with a funny twist. The dancers were good and even though this story was told only through dance, it was fast paced, coherent and included LOL moments. I especially enjoyed the last musical piece which was appropriate to close the show with.
