Exceptionally Haunting, Beautiful, and Timely
Nargang has done a superb job interpreting (and not to mention cutting to Fringe length) Churchill’s text because this was a gorgeously staged piece of dark surrealism. The use of all the theatrical elements, from cast to set pieces to music, was so effective, emotive, and efficient. Nothing seemed extraneous; every movement and gesture felt purposeful. I loved the dance-like scene changes to communicate shifts in time. Major kudos to the cast for embodying this text and Nargang’s directorial vision. This is not an easy show to perform, and I believed every actor, even when they weren’t speaking. And a major shout-out to the incredibly talented band! Incorporating music into drama (especially surrealist drama) is never easy, and I felt that the music blended seamlessly into and commented on what was happening on stage. This was a very timely piece for this moment in time when so much of humanity seems determined to divide itself along arbitrarily, regardless of who or what gets hurt. Far Away is a strong argument for why we desperately need theatre.
