All stereotypes, no substance

As a lesbian, I wanted this to be a show where I saw myself, or at least had fun for an hour, but I came out of it feeling disappointed and honestly alienated. As much as I want to support young LGBT artists, I think they need to put some thought into what they’re putting onstage. It’s fine to have stock characters influenced by stereotypes – that can be a good starting point. But it’s uninteresting and frankly harmful and reductive to only portray LGBT characters as pure stereotypes without any depth. If the characters were at all developed I might have been more willing to tolerate the disjointed writing and the bad acting and the lack of any real plot, but there didn’t seem to be much to keep my interest for a whole hour. I didn’t laugh as much as I expected to, either – the humor is built on 1) pop culture references that aren’t in themselves jokes and 2) putting characters down based on their stereotypical qualities (which are also their only personality traits). I just know that this could be so much better than it was – gay summer camp is such a fun idea – and it was difficult to watch it fail to live up to that potential. I’m happy that other young gay people were able to have fun at this show – I’m just genuinely unsure how and why they were.

Will you be at the closing party can we talk there

So today after the show one of the actors came out and said that he thinks that the show’s been getting these bad reviews because it deals with sex, then asked for our opinions, then peaced out after like 15 seconds before anyone could say anything. I wanted to talk dude! Mostly I want to hear more about what the people involved were thinking about the show, because the idea that it’s just the explicit sexual content that bothers people is genuinely so confusing. It’s the way the sexual content is mobilized to align with and reiterate misogynistic and transphobic stereotypes that I take issue with. I literally didn’t even hate going to this show – parts were campy and pretty funny, the acting was always entertaining, and it was truly such an experience. But I’m confused about how you can read so many reviews that are like “this show HATES women” and think that people are upset because it deals with sex???? Genuinely honestly I want to hear more about what the cast/crew was thinking idk how to contact you guys but I wish there had been a real talkback after this last show you had a half hour left and I really wanted to have a conversation
