Minnesota Fringe

Learn more about dancer-choreographer Micah Chermak, performing May 2 and July 11 at the Theater in the Round Amphitheater on Nicollet Mall as part of Beyond the Box.

What inspired you to create this performance? What inspires you to perform this piece?

A forceful work of symbol and stance.

How is performing outdoors in this kind of venue different from performing in a theatre space? In what ways is this kind of performance more rewarding or interesting than performing in a traditional venue?

It’s very different in many respects, but it is at the same time very similar. The rehearsal process is mostly the same, but the variables of preparation are what needs to be most considered in such a work. I find that some of those variables set limitations to the directions I want to go in the piece, but those same limitations also bring out creative alterations and outlets that I may not have considered otherwise. I have learned to really appreciate the process and the final product is usually very fun and ambitious.

I really love the interaction with the audience with these kinds of shows. Many people start their day not anticipating to see a taiko band and ballet dancers. The response and the energy of the performance are what I find to be most rewarding while the spontaneity is the lemon twist of the process.

What are you most excited for audiences to see?

We’re exploring a unique costume set for this work. It will hopefully work out provided the weather cooperates. That’s pretty exciting. I’m bringing some high caliber dancers with me as well and I’m always excited to bring that kind of talent to an audience.
